Store excess energy with a battery

A home battery stores any excess electricity generated by your solar panels for use when you need it most. Without a battery, any excess your panels generate is sold back to your energy provider for a small amount. Energy retailers don't play fair, if you don't have a battery you'll pay a premium for the electricity you need in the evening.

What is a battery?

A home battery is a device that stores electricity. Generally, a home battery is installed to complement a rooftop solar system. Having a home battery allows you to power your home for several hours to several days, without relying on purchasing energy from the grid. If the home battery is depleted, you then revert to using electricity from the grid. As battery technology improves, having a home battery generally allows you to be completely independent from the electricity grid in fair weather conditions. Purchasing from the grid is becoming more and more expensive, so a home battery to accompany your rooftop solar is becoming a more attractive option to save you money.

Joining a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)

A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a network of batteries that work together as a single power plant. This system is managed by software to automatically optimise the generation, storage, and distribution of energy. Joining a VPP can help you save money, gain energy independence, and improve your energy efficiency without the need for any day to day management. If you're interested in joining a VPP when purchasing a battery with us, we'll advise you on your options.

Maximise financial benefits

A VPP helps you use your battery power smartly, charging it when electricity is cheap and selling power back to the grid when prices are high. This way, you can save money and even earn extra income.

Improved energy management

VPPs use advanced technology to manage your energy usage efficiently. This ensures you get the best financial returns from your battery.

Benefits of a battery

Adding a home battery to your solar setup provides numerous benefits. Not only can you save energy and reduce your reliance on the grid, but you also gain backup power during outages.

Rebates are available

Rebates for batteries vary from state to state, and the Australian federal government does not currently offer any direct home battery rebates. As of October 2024, the following rebates are available:

NSW: Up to $2,400 in rebates from November 1st, 2024.

NSW: Up to $400 in rebates for joining a VPP, from November 1st, 2024.

QLD: Rebate ended 8th May 2024

VIC: Interest-free loans up to $8,800.

If you’d like to know what the exact rebate in your state currently is per battery, feel free to send us an email at info@28watt.com.au, or you can visit Energy.gov’s rebate assistance tool if you’d like to read more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to commonly asked questions about home batteries.

Home batteries store excess energy from solar panels or off-peak grid power for use during peak times. This allows you to maximize self-consumption of solar energy and minimize expensive peak-rate electricity usage, potentially reducing your energy bills by 30-60%.
The ideal battery size depends on your daily energy consumption and goals. For most households, a 10-15kWh system provides good coverage for evening usage. Calculate your average daily consumption and evening power needs to determine the right size.
Most modern home batteries last at least 15 years with proper maintenance. They typically maintain 70-80% of their original capacity after 10 years, though this varies by manufacturer and usage patterns.
Yes, you can install batteries without solar panels. They can still provide value by charging during off-peak times and discharging during peak rates, though the return on investment is typically much better when paired with solar.
